Cancun’s initial airport was established in 1942 as a strategic measure to support the region’s main industry at the time: the chewing gum industry. This first airport operated on a rudimentary runway, with a control tower built of wood and reeds, which remained in operation until 1973. To commemorate its history, a replica stands near the entrance to the city, close to its original location.
The airport’s inaugural commercial flight occurred on May 12, 1975, quickly attracting the attention of international tourists.
From then on, Cancun International Airport grew until it was one of the main airports in Mexico and Latin America, receiving around 13 million people a year.
